Die Casting in Power Tool Manufacturing: Why It Matters for Buyers
Die casting is the manufacturing process that makes precision metal housings, gearboxes, and structural components for power tools — produced at high volume, consistent dimensional accuracy, and lower per-unit cost than machining from solid stock. For buyers sourcing power tool OEM parts or seeking a die casting partner for their own products, understanding the process and quality variables is essential.
We operate die casting production in-house at our Ningbo facility as part of our vertically integrated manufacturing model. Our die casting department serves our own power tool production line and accepts third-party OEM orders for precision aluminum and zinc die cast components.
Die Casting Materials: Aluminum vs Zinc
| Property | Aluminum (ADC12) | Zinc (Zamak #3) |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 2.74 g/cm³ (lightweight) | 6.6 g/cm³ (heavier) |
| Tensile strength | 310 MPa | 283 MPa |
| Surface finish | Good; requires shot blast or anodize for premium finish | Excellent; can be plated to high surface quality |
| Wall thickness min. | 1.5–2.0mm | 0.8–1.0mm (thinner possible) |
| Tooling cost | Higher (higher casting temperature) | Lower |
| Typical application | Gearboxes, motor housings, structural brackets | Decorative parts, connectors, small mechanisms |
ADC12 aluminum is the standard material for power tool structural die castings globally. It offers the best combination of weight, strength, thermal conductivity, and machinability for components that will be post-machined. Our die casting department uses ADC12 for gearbox housings, motor end caps, and main body frames.
Our Die Casting Capabilities
Our die casting department runs both cold-chamber (for aluminum) and hot-chamber (for zinc) die casting machines. Production tolerance for as-cast parts is ±0.3mm. Post-machined surfaces achieve ±0.05mm tolerance using our in-house CNC machining centre.
Key capabilities:
- Shot weight range: 50g to 2.5 kg per shot
- Materials: ADC12 aluminum, Zamak #3 and #5 zinc
- Surface treatments: shot blasting, powder coating, anodizing (via partner)
- CNC post-machining: turning, milling, drilling, tapping in-house
- Quality: IATF 16949 certified process (automotive-grade)
Tooling: The Cost That Buyers Underestimate
Die casting tooling (the steel die) is a significant upfront investment that buyers sometimes underestimate when evaluating die casting suppliers. Tooling cost for a medium-complexity gearbox housing in H13 tool steel is typically $8,000–$18,000 USD. Simple bracket tooling can be $3,000–$6,000; complex multi-cavity housings can exceed $25,000.
Tooling is owned by the buyer and should be listed as a separately invoiced line item in your purchase contract, with a written provision confirming ownership and the right to transfer the tooling to another supplier if the relationship ends. Do not allow tooling to be bundled into the part price without ownership documentation — a common practice that creates supply chain dependency.
Why Power Tool Brands Source Die Casting Internally
For power tool OEM brands sourcing from China, the alternative to in-house die casting is sourcing from an assembly factory that buys die cast parts from an external supplier. The problem is accountability: if the gearbox housing has a porosity defect or a machining error, the assembly factory blames the die caster, the die caster blames the machining operation, and your warranty replacement timeline stretches to weeks.
When you source from a vertically integrated manufacturer like Xiecheng, there is one point of accountability. We produce the die casting, machine it, and assemble the final tool. Quality issues are identified and corrected within our production system, not between suppliers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order for die cast parts?
Minimum order quantity for production runs is 500 pieces per part number. Tooling must be paid in full before die production begins. Sample parts (5–10 pieces) are produced after tooling approval at a nominal charge.
What is your standard lead time for new tooling?
New die tooling: 25–35 days. First article inspection samples: 5 days after tooling completion. Production lead time for repeat orders (tooling already approved): 15–20 days.
Can you provide PPAP documentation for automotive customers?
Yes. Our die casting department is IATF 16949 certified and we produce PPAP Level 3 documentation for automotive components. For non-automotive OEM customers, we provide dimensional inspection reports and material certifications as standard.
